UN DAY CELEBRATION

EL Fasher, Thursday 23 October 2008. Today The African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) and the UN country team celebrated UN day in EL Fasher capital of North Darfur.
During the celebration, the DJSR Mr. Medili read the Secretary General message on behalf of Mr. Rodolphe Adada, the Joint Special Representative.  Mr. Medili also reiterated UNAMID’s leadership commitment to serve all the people of Darfur in order to achieve genuine peace in the region.
230 students from different part of EL Fasher town participated and performed songs in honor of the day. UNAMID contingencies and staff from Gambia, Ruanda, Indonesia and Afghanistan performed traditional dances from their respective countries.
The celebration of the day was also marked by the launch of a tree-planting campaign UN-sponsored which will take place next few weeks to help fight the desertification of the region.
Similar ceremonies took place in UNAMID sectors in the three states of Darfur.

Meeting at UNAMID Sector South HQ in Nyala, South Darfur        

On 22 October 2008, the Sector South Commander chaired a meeting with the Sheikhs of Sheikhs of Otash and Deriej IDP camps at the Sector HQ. The Main issue discussed was the frequent vehicles hijacking in the areas of the IDPs Camps. The Sheikhs provided their telephone numbers and requested to be alerted whenever such incidents happen again to enable them to react and be on the lookout.
