Security Situation in Darfur

The security situation in Darfur has been relatively calm. However, banditry activities targeting UNAMID personnel were reported in North, South and West Darfur.

 

Unknown men broke into a house occupied by UNAMID personnel in El Fasher, North Darfur on 2 July taking away some personal effects and money.

 

Also, a house occupied by UNAMID police personnel in Nyala, South Darfur, was broken into on 5 July. The thieves took household goods, furniture appliances and personal effects. The incident was reported to Government of Sudan Police.

 

UNAMID military conducted 83 patrols including confidence-building, escort patrols and nine night patrols covering sixty four (64) villages and IDP camps during the reporting period. UNAMID Police advisers conducted 116 patrols in and around the villages and IDP camps.

 

UNAMID Deputy Force Commander visits West Darfur

UNAMID Deputy Force Commander, Major-General Dumi Dumisani Mdutyana, today travelled to Kulbus town, south west of El Geneina in West Darfur, as part of his familiarization tour to the sectors and to visit the troops deployed in the area.

 

Meanwhile, UNAMID Force Commander, General Martin Luther Agwai paid a courtesy visit to the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) Headquarters in Khartoum and to Juba, South Sudan on 5 and 6 July.

 

Irish Delegation arrives in North Darfur

Following the kidnapping of two staff members, one from Ireland and the other from Uganda, of the international non-governmental organization GOAL, in North Darfur, a delegation of Irish and Ugandan representatives arrived in El Fasher, North Darfur today in an effort to secure their release. The officials are expected to pay a courtesy call on UNAMID Deputy Joint Special Representative (DJSR), Mr. Henry Anyidoho.
