Biographical Note

 

New permanent representative of Burundi presents credentials

The new Permanent Representative of Burundi to the United Nations, Augustin Nsanze, presented his credentials to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today.

 

Prior to his appointment, Mr. Nsanze served as his country’s Ambassador in Ethiopia and Djibouti, with residence in Addis Ababa, simultaneously representing his country at the African Union and Economic Commission for Africa (2006-2008).  He was a Counsellor at Burundi’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York from 2004 to 2006.

 

Mr. Nsanze started his career in the academic field in 1978 as an Instructor in history and geography at the Lycee Clarte-Notre Dame in Bujimbura.  In 1979, he started teaching at the University of Burundi, where he became a history Professor in 1987, an Adviser to the Director of the Department of Scientific Research in 1989 and Chief of the Scientific Research Service in 1990.

 

Having returned to his professorship in 1992, he became a First Adviser to the President of the country on social and cultural issues.  In 1998, he served as a Consultant on the history of Burundi at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Nairobi office and, in 1999, as an invited Researcher at the University of Lieden in Pays-Bas.  From 2001 to 2003, he was a Research Assistant at the Université Laval in Canada.

 

An author of numerous articles and three books, Mr. Nsanze holds a degree in history and geography from the University of Burundi and a Doctor of Philosophy in history from the Sorbonne, Paris.

 

Born in 1953 in Kibumbu, Mbuye, Mr. Nsanze is married.
