FAO at the 3rd International Conference on Financing for Development, July 13-16 / UN Conference Centre, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia


ROME, Italy, July 10, 2015/African Press Organization (APO)/ World leaders, global financial institutions, private sector representatives and civil society groups will gather next week at the Third International Conference on Financing for Development in Ethiopia to galvanize political will around financing sustainable development that empowers people and respects the environment.


The meeting will result in the Addis Ababa Action Agenda – laying the foundation for financing the Post-2015 Development Agenda, including the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to be agreed later this year.


Eliminating hunger and malnutrition are essential for achieving the SDGs, as they affect health, education and the ability to lead productive lives. FAO will participate in a number of events highlighting the importance of investment in agriculture, agribusiness and social protection to achieve food and nutrition security.    MEDIA RESOURCES

Side-event: Achieving Zero Hunger — The Critical Role of Investments in Social Protection and Agriculture

A new report by FAO, the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP) estimates that eradicating world hunger by 2030 will require an additional $267 billion per year on average for investments in rural and urban areas and in social protection. This would average $160 annually for each person living in extreme poverty over the 15 year period. These and additional findings will be presented followed by a discussion regarding the way forward. Participants include the Minister of Finance of the Republic of Guyana, the heads of the UN Rome-based food agencies, high level representatives of Chile’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and the UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, and the President of Biovision.
