The AU Special Representative in Central African Republic condemns attacks against MISCA soldiers

 

BANGUI, Central African Republic, May 30, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU) and Head of the African-led International Mission of Support in the Central African Republic (MISCA), General Jean-Marie Michel Mokoko, notes with concern the increasing attacks against MISCA forces. During the past few days, MISCA troops have been targets of increasing attacks in the CAR capital, Bangui. The record of these recent attacks is as follows:

– 1 soldier of the Rwandan contingent was injured following the explosion of a grenade in PK5, on 25 May 2014;

– 1 soldier of the Burundian contingent sustained injuries from gunshots from unidentified gunmen on Sunday, 25 May 25 2014, in the 3rd District of Bangui;

– 5 soldiers of the Equatorial Guinea contingent sustained, injuries following a grenade attack on 26 May 2014, near Bangui-Mpoko Airport ;

– 1 soldier of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) contingent and sustained injuries from a grenade attack on 26 May 2014.

The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the Commission strongly condemns the acts of aggression being perpetrated against MISCA and international forces in the CAR. He wishes a speedy recovery to the wounded soldiers.

He pays tribute to the courage and selflessness of the MISCA personnel, and reaffirms the unwavering commitment and determination of the Mission to continue to work towards the effective implementation of its mandate.

Since its deployment, on 19 December 2013, MISCA has registered 27 losses in its ranks and 166 soldiers have sustained injuries.
