Ambassador Bennett Condemns Attacks in Nigeria

OTTAWA, Canada, February 14, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ Andrew Bennett, Canada’s Ambassador for Religious Freedom, today issued the following statement:

“Canada condemns the awful attacks in northeastern Nigeria that have reportedly killed 39 people, including three children, wounded many others, and destroyed a mosque and more than 1,000 homes.

“On behalf of all Canadians, I extend my prayers and deepest sympathies to the families and friends of those who lost their lives, to those injured in the attacks and those now without homes.

“Canada is committed to working with Nigerian institutions and civil society representatives to promote freedom of religion and human rights for all Nigerians.

“Canada stands with the Government of Nigeria in its fight against terrorism.”

In 2013, Canada announced a two-year project ($553,643) to promote intercommunity dialogue and conflict mediation in Jos and in other parts of Nigeria’s Plateau State, where more than 5,000 people have died since 2001.
