The African Union welcomes the progress registered in the transition process in Tunisia

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, January 30, 2014/African Press Organization (APO)/ The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Nkozasana Dlamini-Zuma, welcomes the inauguration of the new Tunisian Government headed by Mr. Mehdi Jomaâ, on 29 January 2014, following negotiations among the various Tunisian stakeholders, to facilitate the conclusion of the transition that began after the Revolution of January 2011.

Recalling the dispatch to Tunis, in early July 2013, of a mission of the AU Panel of the Wise, as well as the visit of former President Pedro Pires of Cape Verde to Tunisia in September 2013, to encourage the various Tunisian political and social stakeholders to persevere on the path of dialogue, the Chairperson of the Commission emphasizes that the establishment of the new Government, following the adoption of the new Tunisian Constitution, on 26 January 2014, is a further testimony to the maturity of the Tunisian political class, its sense of responsibility and compromise, as well as its commitment to preserving the higher interests of Tunisia. She reiterates the AU’s appreciation to all the Tunisian political stakeholders, and stresses the exemplary nature of their approach, based on the constant search for consensus to overcome the difficulties inherent in any transition.

The Chairperson of the Commission reiterates the AU’s commitment to continue to support the transition process in Tunisia and Africa’s enduring solidarity with the authorities and the people of Tunisia.
