Special Representative Buyoya visits AFISMA Troops in Gao, Northern Mali Raises Troops Morale and Commends AFISMA Forces for their Exemplary Conduct

 

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, April 8, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission and Head of the African-led International Mission in Mali (AFISMA), Former President Pierre Buyoya, has commended AFISMA Troops for their tenacity and exemplary conduct under challenging battlefield conditions.

 

The Special Representative was addressing AFISMA troops in Gao, on 5 April 2013, during his first visit to Northern Mali, which offered the Head of Mission an opportunity to see the difficult conditions in which the troops have been operating since their progressive deployment began in January 2013.

 

The Special Representative visited the Niger and Senegalese Contingents, received a briefing from the Commander of the French military base in Gao, and paid a courtesy call on the Governor of the region.

 

Addressing the troops, who were delighted to meet their Head of Mission, the Special Representative commended the AFISMA Forces for their resilience, exemplary conduct and tenacity. He reiterated that AFISMA is in Mali to help Malians liberate their country from terrorists and other international criminal networks, as well as to support the intra-Malian dialogue and reconciliation process and assist Mali in its return to democratic legitimacy. He enjoined the Troops to keep up their good work avoid any behavior that could tarnish the reputation of AFISMA.

 

During his meeting with the Governor, the Special Representative underscored the important role of local administration in the stabilization of Mali. Before returning to Bamako, Special Representative Buyoya spoke to the media and said:

 

“I came to visit AFISMA Troops in and around Gao and also to see the work of the French forces. I congratulate France for its assistance in liberating Mali from terrorists and other criminal cartels. I am impressed by the resilience of AFISMA Troops and their collaborative relationship with the French and Malian forces jointly operating in Gao.”

 

The Special Representative was accompanied to Gao by the AFISMA Deputy Force Commander, Brigadier General Yaye Garba and the Special Advisor to the Head of Mission, General Jean Marie Michel Mokoko.
