Statement by the spokesperson of EU High Representative Catherine Ashton on the expulsion of a UN Human Rights Officer by the Government of South Sudan

BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, November 28, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

“The High Representative is concerned by the Government of South Sudan’s decision to expel a Human Rights Officer working for the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). This expulsion represents a breach of South Sudan’s obligations under the UN Charter and sends the wrong signal about South Sudan’s commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights. Respect for human rights is fundamental to South Sudan’s efforts to become a viable, peaceful, and prosperous state.

The EU expresses its strong support for UNMISS and, in particular, its crucial work in the field of human rights in South Sudan.”
