The celebration of Africa Safety Day aims to highlight the scourge of road accidents on African roads whose significant direct cost in lives lost, social and economic implications cannot be ignored.
Participants on the African Road Safety celebration will be gathered from Ministries of transport, health, education and police; NGOs; IGOs; civil society organizations; stakeholders from public and private sectors; students; automobile associations; associations of road accident victims, among others.
The 18th African Union Summit, held in January 2012 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, endorsed the conclusions of the Second Session of the Conference of African Ministers of Transport (CAMT) held in Luanda, Angola from 21-25 November 2011 which, among others adopted the African Plan of Action from the 2011-2020 Road Safety Decade in accordance with the resolution proclaiming the decade of Action for Road Safety. The decision calls the third Sunday of November, which is the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims as Africa’s Road Safety Day. Also, the Executive Council of the African Union adopted Decision Ex.CL/Dec.682 (XX) that item 4 (ii) establishes Africa’s Road Safety Day. The establishment of this day is one more instrument for African States in their on-going struggle against road traffic accidents. The event is expected to be celebrated in all Member States
