UNICEF STATEMENT ON LATEST EVENTS IN SOUTH KORDOFAN

NEW YORK, November 15, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ UNICEF expresses its condemnation of the latest attack on civilians in Kadugli, capital of the Sudanese state of South Kordofan. At around 6 pm local time on Tuesday 13 November, mortar shells landed about 500 metres east of the Governor’s Office and in another area close to Kadugli Bus Station. Among those killed in the shelling were three relatives of a UNICEF staff member.

UNICEF Sudan Officer in Charge, Ray Virgilio Torres, said: “This is only the latest in a series of attacks on Kadugli in which unarmed civilians have been killed and injured. The fact that the victims of this incident included family members of one of our staff who risk their lives bringing assistance to those affected by the conflict in the border area only adds to our sense of outrage.”

According to UN Security sources, a total of 18 people have died and 32 others have been injured during recent shelling incidents in Kadugli Town which began on October 8.
