Poet and Media worker killed in Mogadishu

MOGADISHU, Somalia, October 29, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) was appalled to learn of the murder of poet and media worker in Mogadishu.

According to our information, Warsame Shire Awale, a renowned poet, who is one of the workers of Radio Kulmiye was attacked on Monday evening, 29 October 2012, near his house in Waberi district by unidentified armed men who shot him several times. He was immediately rushed to Daru Shifa hospital where he was declared dead.

NUSOJ was informed that Warsame Shire Awale has been receiving threats recently about comments he made about gunmen who are aiming at the civilian people. The union believes that Warsame was targeted for expressing his views freely through the media.

“We urge the Federal authorities of Somalia to conduct a full and impartial investigation into Warsame’s death and the sustained killings of journalists to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice because justice delayed is a justice denied,” said Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General.

Warsame was working as a comic actor at Radio Kulmiye and is well-known for entertaining the audience of the FM radio station. He was also singer-songwriter and a member of Onkod singers group. He is the eightieth media worker killed in Somalia in this year alone.
