Briefing by the International Committee of Red Cross on its activities related to peace and security in Africa

 

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, October 17, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ Invitation to representatives of the media

 

What: President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), Mr. Peter Maurer, will brief the Peace and Security Council (PSC) on ICRC’s activities related to peace and security in Africa.

 

When: 18 October 2012 from 10:00 am –1:00 pm

 

Where: African Union Headquarters, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Plenary Hall (Old building)

 

Who: Peace and Security Council Member States and all AU Member States.

 

Why: In view of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the ICRC and the OAU on 4 May 1992, marking the beginning of the collaboration between the two organizations through the sharing of experiences and views on humanitarian consequences arising from armed conflict situations on the Continent, ICRC has been briefing the PSC once in a year on its activities related to peace and security in Africa from the perspective of the promotion of the International Humanitarian Law.

 

To reaffirm ICRC’s commitment to the partnership and cooperation with AU, as well as regular consultations between the AU and the ICRC, within the framework of the activities undertaken by the ICRC towards the promotion and respect of International Humanitarian Law in situations of armed conflict in Africa.
