Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI condemns incidents at FPI meeting

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, January 23, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) strongly condemns the incidents that occurred on Saturday, 21 January 2012, in the Abidjan neighbourhood of Yopougon, at a meeting of the Front populaire ivoirien (FPI, Ivorian Popular Front), in which many people were injured.

UNOCI wishes to reiterate its attachment to freedom of assembly and freedom of expression, which are indispensable to democratic life.

UNOCI invites the Government of Côte d’Ivoire to take appropriate measures to determine the circumstances surrounding these unfortunate incidents, identify those responsible, arrest them, and have them tried in conformity with the law.

The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Bert Koenders, wishes to reaffirm that UNOCI remains ready to assist the Ivorian Government in the conduct of the investigation in order to avoid any repetition of such acts.

UNOCI launches an appeal for calm and urges the parties to avoid any action liable to increase the tension and cause the situation to deteriorate.
