Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI chief receives diplomatic corps

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, November 9, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Côte d’Ivoire needs international cooperation in order to turn a page and write a new one, it needs cooperation on the political front and with regard to security, of which I felt the urgency during my visit to the West but also economic cooperation in the short and medium term and youth employment, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Bert Koenders declared in Abidjan on Tuesday.

Speaking at a reception he hosted at the headquarters of the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) for members of the diplomatic corps accredited to the country, Mr. Koenders confirmed the Mission’s commitment to help Ivorians with the support of the international community.

“UNOCI has a strong mandate and plans to implement with determination and total impartiality with the support of the international community. We need each other,” he said, adding that he hoped to learn a lot from them and their experience in the country.

Turning to the issue of the forthcoming legislative elections, the Special Representative solicited the support of the ambassadors to in order to overcome the different challenges. In this regard, he recalled the immense work that the diplomatic corps and UNOCI had done together. “The challenges facing us are immense and we must meet them without marring the post-electoral period with unacceptable violence as was the case after the presidential election, » he said. The Special Representative reiterated UNOCI’s multifaceted assistance, in terms of logistics, material and human resources and security in order to contribute to the success of the legislative elections.

UNOCI will continue to mobilise the international community to ensure that all the necessary support is available so that the elections can be held under the best possible conditions, he said, adding that none of this will be easy.

Referring to his certification mandate to ensure that the elections are open, free, fair and transparent, Mr. Koenders said that they must also be as inclusive as possible, adding that participation or non participation in the elections remained a sovereign act of each political grouping. “This the reason I am strongly urging the Ivorian political actors to become involved in the process by putting the interest of the Ivorian people first. I am pleased to note that political dialogue has already helped to make political relations les tense and increased opportunities in this regard,” said the chief of UNOCI.

“In front of you all, I would like to say to the Ivorian people that they are not alone in their fight for peace, reconciliation and economic revival,” added Mr. Koenders, who said he was convinced in each of the diplomats he would find a partner, an ally and an accomplice in accomplishing his mandate at the service of the people of Côte d’Ivoire. « In all of you I am convinced that I will find a solid base to overcome the challenges. Together we will succeed,” he concluded.
