Liberia / Reported use of lethal force by the security forces must be investigated immediately

LONDON, United-Kingdom, November 8, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — As the final stage of the Liberian election gets underway, Amnesty International urges the police and all Liberian political candidates to act to stop the election related violence and prevent further bloodshed.

“Politicians and the police must demonstrate that their main concern is protecting lives,” said Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for Africa, Carolyn Norris.

Action by the police must be appropriate and proportionate. Firearms should only be used as a last resort to protect life and only when less extreme measures are inadequate and in line with international law and standards. All use of lethal force by the security forces should be investigated immediately.

Politicians must demonstrate that they are serious about putting an end to violence among supporters. All political candidates must ensure their supporters respect the law and make clear to their supporters that those responsible for ordering or carrying out human rights abuses will be held accountable.

Amnesty International is urging the government to carry out independent, impartial and thorough judicial investigation, once the elections are concluded, into human rights abuses that occurred during the election, and bring to justice those responsible
