Statement by the spokesperson of the High Representative Catherine Ashton on Liberia

BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, November 7, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The spokesperson of Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement:

“The High Representative once again congratulates the Liberian People and the Liberian National Elections Commission (NEC), following the release of the final results on 25 October, on the successful conclusion of the first round of the Presidential and Legislative elections. The High Representative is pleased to note that the elections were conducted peacefully and were qualified by all observation missions, national or international, as credible and transparent.

However, the High Representative regrets the opposition’s decision not to participate in the second round of the Presidential elections which take place on 8 November. This action deprives Liberians of the choice they deserve and weakens rather than strengthens the democratic process.”
