The African Union stresses the need for all Liberian stakeholders to work towards a successful presidential run-off on 8 November 2011

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, November 2, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Jean Ping, is closely monitoring the developments in Liberia, following the release, on 25 October 2011, of the results of the first round of voting for the Liberian presidential election, which was held under conditions that have been judged by both the local and international observers as free, fair and credible.

The Chairperson of the Commission calls upon all the Liberian stakeholders to do everything in their power to sustain this laudable display of electoral maturity and, therefore, facilitate the successful holding of the runoff, scheduled for 8 November 2011, so as to further consolidate the tremendous progress made by Liberia in terms of recovery and peacebuilding. He stresses the need for all concerned to place the national interest above all other considerations and to demonstrate the required sense of patriotism.

The Chairperson of the Commission wishes the Republic of Liberia a very successful runoff, and an enduring peaceful postelection atmosphere.
