European Parliament’s President Buzek to pay visit to Libya and Tunisia – 29-31 October

BRUSSELS, Kingdom of Belgium, October 31, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The President of the European Parliament, Jerzy Buzek, will leave tomorrow for a 3-day visit to Libya and Tunisia.

In Tripoli, Libya, President Buzek will meet with Chairman Mustafa Abdul Jalil and several other members of the National Transitional Council, as well as with representatives of the international community and of the Libyan civil society.

President Buzek said:

“I am coming to a liberated country and I would like to pay tribute to the courage and determination of the Libyan people. Libyans stood up for their dignity and their freedom. They overthrew Gaddafi’s 42-years reign of terror. I do honour to the martyrs of the revolution and to the many innocent victims. The new Libya has to be a better place for all Libyans. I am looking forward to my discussions with the National Transitional Council and with the emerging civil society.”

President Buzek also returns to Tunis after his first visit from 17 to 19 March 2011. On his way there, he will first visit the refugee camps Shusha/Al-Hayat in order to gauge the scope of the humanitarian situation. In Tunis, he will meet with the heads of transitional authorities, with leaders of the winning political parties and with representatives of civil society.

President Buzek said:

“I return with great pleasure to Tunisia, the country from where the Arab Spring started. When I visited the country for the first time, in March of this year, so many questions were still open. Tunisians can be proud that they are leading the democratic change of the Arab World, having held the first free elections in the history of their country. However, political and economic transition is far from over. It has barely started. I am going to listen to the aspirations of the different political forces that are emerging and I would like to offer Europe’s support.”
