Libya / Gaddafi gone a great victory for Libyans, says Frattini

ROME, Italy, October 20, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Gaddafi’s exit from the scene “is a great victory for the Libyan people; Libya is finally free and it is now possible to establish that government that everyone has been waiting for, and to move on to democratic elections”. These were Minister Frattini’s first comments on hearing the news from Libya on the death of Muammar Gaddafi in an assault by NTC forces in Sirte.

The NTC’s confirmation of Gaddafi’s death “is an extremely important turn of events”, the minister added, explaining that “we will listen to what President Jalil has to say”. Meanwhile, he underscored, “I think that if this were truly the solution it would be a great victory for the Libyan people, Libya would finally be free, the Libyan government everyone has been waiting for could be established and democratic elections be held”.

Frattini then said that the affair had “concluded tragically, since the dictator refused to the end to surrender to international justice, which would certainly not have hung him but that would have judged him according to the law”.

The action that led to Gaddafi’s death, the minister pointed out, “was an operation by the NTC and no one else”. Italy’s was a supporting role. “Our intelligence was always present on the ground, not operationally but in support of NTC activities”.
