New humanitarian operation for the Libyan population

 

ROME, Italy, July 20, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Italian Development Cooperation is continuing its efforts on behalf of the Libyan people falling victim to the conflict in their country. With the operational support of the Defence Ministry, a C130J aircraft took off from Pratica di Mare today for Benghazi. Its task is to repatriate a number of Libyans, with accompanying personnel, who arrived in Italy in April 2011 for treatment in hospitals in Lazio and Lombardy regions.

This humanitarian operation also includes the transport of 2 tons of medicines and medical supplies that the Direction General for Development Cooperation is donating to the Transitional National Council (TNC) for distribution in the main hospitals in Benghazi and its vicinity. The supplies include emergency medical kits for general conditions, which will enable treamtent for 20,000 patients over 3 months. The C130J will also be carrying 360 kg of medicines and medical supplies provided by the San Camillo Forlanini hospital in agreement with Italian Development Cooperation.

Also aboard the aircraft, and responding to an explicit request for assistance made by the Republic of Slovenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are about 1.8 tons of drugs and medical supplies donated to the TNC by the Slovenian people. A Slovenian delegation led by the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Mrs. Dragoljuba Bencina, will be on board, their task being to deliver the donation to the authorities in Benghazi.
