Sweden to strengthen development cooperation with Kenya

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, July 14, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Government today decided to increase development assistance to Kenya in an effort to strengthen the momentum in the country for democratic and economic development. The appropriation will be increased this year by SEK 25 million to SEK 375 million and then to SEK 400 million in 2012 and 2013.

“Sweden’s engagement in the implementation of Kenya’s new constitution provides opportunities to strengthen the country’s institutions, deepen democracy and promote human rights,” says Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson.

Sweden’s increased contribution will mainly be to support democracy and human rights in Kenya. A smaller share will go towards development in suburban areas. Sweden is working with both agencies and civil rights organisations, as well as businesses actively committed to continued democratisation.

“There is no doubt that at a high political level in Kenya there are forces that are opposed to reforms,” says Ms Carlsson. “There is a clear risk of a backlash, which is precisely why it is now important to give full support to the positive developments that are occurring and within reach.”

The increased country allocation will be administered by Sida in accordance with the existing strategy for development cooperation with Kenya for 2009-2013.
