Sweden / The Government adopts a new strategy for aid initiatives in Zimbabwe

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, July 14, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Government has today taken a decision on a strategy for aid initiatives in Zimbabwe for the years 2011-2012. The strategy focuses on support for democratic development and respect for human rights in the country.

“The key to democratic development in Zimbabwe lies in the implementation of the Global Political Agreement (GPA) on power sharing, which is to pave the way for free and fair elections with full respect for the will of the people. Swedish involvement in the country is based on supporting democratic reform and contributing to enable free and fair elections in Zimbabwe,” says Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson.

The date of general elections in Zimbabwe is as yet uncertain, but could be as soon as in late 2011.

The new strategy means that Sweden’s initiatives will concentrate on the democracy, human rights and gender equality sector. To contribute to a long-term and sustainable democratic society initiatives are also being implemented to increase access to basic social service in health and education for vulnerable groups.

“It is vital for continued development in the country that reform-friendly forces in the Government can show they have made progress as regards alleviating social poverty. We also intend to strengthen the dialogue with the Zimbabwean society to support the actors who are working for reforms in democracy and human rights, and for reduced polarisation,” says Minister for International Development Cooperation Gunilla Carlsson.

The volume of Swedish aid will amount to some SEK 200 million per year.
