“Today Italy recognises the birth of the new independent state of South Sudan and congratulates its people.

As witness to the 2005 Peace Agreement between North and South and member of the international commission charged with monitoring its implementation, Italy has always worked to build a lasting peace in the region.

Italy hopes that the new State will establish its own institutions and ensure peaceful and prosperous development that is capable of meeting the needs and expectations of its people, with the full support of the international community.

Italy will continue to make every effort to foster and preserve regional stability. We encourage the authorities of the Republic of South Sudan to peacefully develop their country’s relations with Sudan and lay the foundations for a democratic, fair and inclusive society. A society that is based on the rule of law and the respect for human rights and the fundamental freedoms”.
