Focus Libya – Contact Group (Istanbul 15 July 2011)

ROME, Italy, July 12, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Support for the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) and the “delicate phase of stabilisation and transition” in the post-Gaddafi period. These will be the main items on the agenda of the 4th meeting of the Contact Group taking place in Istanbul on 15 July 2011. Italy will be represented by Foreign Minister Franco Frattini.

The Foreign Ministry has underscored that the full involvement of the NTC will be “fundamental” in the post-conflict period, characterised by the search for a political solution through a national dialogue managed by the Libyans themselves.

At the Istanbul meeting Italy will pledge its support, especially economic, for the TNC, which has now been recognised by 17 countries. And, thanks to the ad hoc provision included in the mission decree, Libyan assets frozen in Italy will be used as collateral for loans to the NTC.

Italy will play a front line role in the reorganization of Libya’s healthcare infrastructure. And more: in recent days the foreign ministry has sent a mission to Benghazi to assess initiatives involving security, police, customs and border controls, including on the basis of a Memorandum of Understanding signed in Naples a few weeks ago.
