South Sudan / Amnesty International Experts Available

 

LONDON, United-Kingdom, July 5, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — On July 9 2011 South Sudan will celebrate its independence. Amnesty International has experts available to give comment and human rights analysis in both English and French.

 

On the eve of its independence, Amnesty International is calling on the government of south Sudan to:

 

•    Ensure accountability for abuses by security forces

•    Uphold the right to freedom of expression and association

•    Review the legality of all detentions, particularly of juveniles

•    Promote and protect the rights of women and girls

•    Ratify international human rights treaties

 

Possible talking points include:

 

•    Human rights impact of the violence in Southern Kordofan

•    Forced return to high risk areas of those displaced by violence

•    Overview of the state of human rights in southern Sudan
