FOCUS-LIBIA – Frattini, onwards for a political solution

FOCUS-LIBIA – Frattini, onwards for a political solution

ROME, Italy, July 1, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Writing in his “Diario italiano” blog, Minister Franco Frattini has given an assurance that Italy will make a strong and convinced contribution to the work of the International Criminal Court (ICC) at The Hague. “Our country, in line with its allies and partners, will continue in its commitment to the international mission to open the way to a peaceful, political solution to the Libyan crisis and create a united and democratic Libya without Gaddafi”. Minister Frattini observed that “the Court’s decision on the Libyan regime’s responsibilities confirms the legitimacy of NATO’s humanitarian mission in Libya, acting under a UN mandate”.

“In humanitarian emergencies caused by acts of repression committed by dictators against their own people”, underscored the Minister, “the international community has a ‘responsibility to protect'”. Frattini again noted that the decision by the ICC judges “confirms the grave responsibilities of Gaddafi, his son Saif and his son-in-law Al Senoussi for the crimes committed against the opponents of the regime from 15 February 2011. Crimes against humanity: in Tripoli, Benghazi and Misrata”.

The situation in Libya was one of the topics discussed by Minister Frattini and his Estonian and Canadian colleagues, Urmas Paet and John Baird. The latter has just completed a mission to Benghazi, where he had talks with the Transitional National Council (TNC) in Benghazi. In both meetings, support, including financial, for the TNC was confirmed, as was the determination to continue with the international mission to speed up the process of opening the way to a political solution without Gaddafi.
