The AU Chairperson receives UN Special Representative for Somalia

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, June 21, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), Dr. Jean Ping, today, 20 June 2011, received in his office at AUC Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ambassador Dr Augustine Mahiga, Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations for Somalia as well as the Special Representative of the Chairperson of the AU Commission for Somalia, Ambassador Boubacar Diarra.

Ambassador Mahiga briefed the Chairperson on the process that led to the signing of the Kampala Accord by President Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed of the Transitional Federal Government (TFG) of Somalia and Shariff Hassan Sheikh Aden, Speaker of the Transitional Federal Parliament (TFP) of Somalia.

The Chairperson welcomed the signing of the Kampala Accord as a very positive development, emphasizing the need to support it fully.

In this regard the Chairperson and the Special Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations called for a speedy drawing up of a roadmap, with clear bench marks, timelines and compliance mechanisms which will be essential for the attainment of the transitional tasks within the next twelve months.

The implementation and monitoring mechanisms at the technical and political level, including the Political Bureau, are key elements of the Accord that should enhance and ensure compliance and accountability of the Transitional Federal Institutions to the people of Somalia, the region and the international community on the accomplishment of the transitional tasks in the next year.

The draft roadmap will be considered by the envisaged consultative meeting in Mogadishu soon.

The Chairperson and the UN Special Representative took note of the resignation, yesterday, 19 June 2011, of Prime Minister Mohamed Abdullahi Mohammed of the Transitional Federal Government of Somalia. They considered it as a positive step in the spirit of permitting implementation of the Kampala Accord, which seeks to end the current transitional period with deferral of elections for one year.

The Chairperson encouraged President Sheikh Sharif Ahmed to expeditiously carry out the necessary consultations which will lead to a quick endorsement of the nominee for Prime Minister and cabinet by the Transitional Federal Parliament. In similar vein, the Speaker of the Transitional Federal Parliament was called on to urge parliamentarians to support and speed up the establishment of a new government.

Earlier on, the UN and AU Special Representatives were received by Ambassador Ramtane Lamamra, Commissioner for Peace and Security, with whom they exchanged views on the current situation in Somalia and possible way forward.
