Exhibition on the “Garibaldini of Egypt” in Cairo



CAIRO, Egypt, June 21, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — An exhibition on the “Garibaldini of Egypt”, organised by the Italian diplomatic network, which inaugurated “Our people on the Nile: the Cioni family”, a tribute to Italian immigrants who contributed to the process of national integration. The exhibition, mounted in the Italian Consulate in Cairo, falls within the framework of the celebrations for the Unity of Italy.


The objects, documents and photographs on display document the life and work of Italians in 19th century Egypt who contributed to the country’s development. The stories of young patriots who set off for Africa, beginning with Raffaele Cioni, the young follower of Garibaldi to whom the exhibition is dedicated, who emigrated to Egypt in 1860 after having participated in Garibaldi’s “Expedition of the 1000”, torn between his love of State and the papal faith of the family of the woman he loved. He settled in Cairo, where he contributed to projects for illumination and gas at the end of the 19th century.
