UNAMID Chief to Launch Humanitarian initiative

 

 

EL FASHER (DARFUR), Sudan, May 2, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Joint Special Representative, Professor Ibrahim Gambari will launch a major initiative aimed at expanding the access for humanitarian delivery to conflict areas in North Darfur on Sunday 1 May.

 

Called “the spring basket,” the project is aimed at facilitating delivery of humanitarian aid to selected communities in the Jebel Marra and parts of North Darfur, which have been difficult to access due to the conflict.

 

UNAMID, the UN Office of the Humanitarian Coordinator (OCHA), UNICEF, WFP, UNDP and UNHCR are engaged in the project which will deliver aid and assess the needs of communities in both government-controlled areas and areas controlled by non-signatory movements in North Darfur.

 

All media organizations are invited to attend a press stakeout following the return of a UNAMID/UN interagency team to launch the project in Kutum, 1600, Sunday 1 May, El Fasher Airport VIP lounge.
