UNAMID vehicle carjacked, recovered in North Darfur
A UNAMID vehicle carjacked on 27 March in Zamzam internally displaced people (IDP) camp, near El Fasher, North Darfur, was recovered yesterday by Mission peacekeepers.

The theft occurred when five unknown armed men ambushed a UNAMID night patrol, managing to stop a 4×4 in the convoy, with two police advisors and a language assistant on board, forcing the occupants out of the vehicle at gunpoint.

The armoured personnel carrier (APC) of the Indonesian Formed Police Unit (FPU) tasked with the protection of the convoy intervened but was fired upon by the assailants. The APC crew held its fire and did not respond until the personnel from the stolen vehicle made their escape and were out of harm’s way. The FPU officers exchanged fire in self-defense with the fleeing assailants.

It was at daylight that the stolen vehicle was found abandoned, riddled with bullet impacts, three kilometres away from the scene of the attack. Although no attackers were arrested, blood stains in the vehicle indicated that at least one of them had been wounded in the firefight. No peacekeeper was harmed in this incident.

UNAMID patrols
UNAMID military conducted 169 patrols including routine, short-range, long-range, night and humanitarian escort patrols covering 81 villages and IDP camps.

UNAMID police advisors conducted 106 patrols in villages and IDP camps.
