AUC – DREA and PRC to hold a retreat on enhancing collaborative efforts to strengthen the agricultural sector, rural economies and the environment

 

 

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, March 30, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Department of Rural Economy and Agriculture of the African Union Commission (AUC-DREA) and the Permanent Representatives Committee (PRC) of AU Member States will hold a retreat in Maputo, Mozambique, on 11-13 April 2011. The retreat aims to promote collective engagement and strengthen the working relationship between the AUC-DREA and the PRC in pursuit of common objectives at the service of the African continent and its Member States. 

 
 

The overall objective of the Maputo gathering is to have an opportunity to discuss AUC-DREA work scope and programmes within the AU mandate. The retreat has also specific objectives such as; appraising the PRC with the role of AUC-DREA in delivering the relevant AUC objectives according to the AU strategic plan; presenting the AUC-DREA strategic and operational plan to the PRC; and obtaining feedback from the PRC on AUC-DREA performance and suggestions on more value addition.

 
 

The retreat is expected to come up with enhanced  understanding and appreciation of AUC-DREA, its institutional arrangement, strategic framework and role and responsibilities; an action plan with result-based matrix taken from AUC-DREA strategic and operational plan; and a communication strategy for engaging the PRC, AU regional offices and headquarters in championing the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Programme (CAADP), among others.

 

The mandate of AUC-DREA is to work with Member States, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), Pan-African Institutions, Civil Society and Private Sector Organizations and Development Partners to strengthen the agricultural sector, rural economies and the environment in order to improve the livelihoods of the African people and ensure food security and sound environmental management for sustainable development. 

 

AUC-DREA responds to the challenges of agriculture and rural development in Africa through a comprehensive framework, CAADP that supports empowerment of rural producers, encourages increased private sector engagement and focuses on improved governance. CAADP’s main objective is to assist African countries accelerate economic growth through agriculture-led development, which  eliminates  hunger, reduces poverty and enhance food and nutrition security as well as growth in exports.  AUC-DREA role in the CAADP process is to guide and support regional and country processes to advance CAADP implementation.

 

An equally important area being addressed at the retreat is sustainable development to take care of water, environment and climate change issues as well as reducing environmental degradation.
