UN drugs and crime chief to highlight Kenya’s role in curbing regional and international security threats

 

 

NAIROBI, Kenya, March 25, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — On Monday 28 March, the Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Yury Fedotov will be holding a Press Conference in Nairobi to discuss the Office’s work in the region and provide updates on the UN’s assistance in the following issues:

Counter-piracy operations in Kenya and East Africa;
Illicit drugs (trafficking, consumption and treatment);
Criminal justice and prison reform;
Corruption;
Transnational organized crime.

The visit is the Executive Director’s first such engagement in Eastern Africa since assuming duties as the UN’s lead anti-drug and crime official in September, and follows expanding cooperation on several levels, including:

Working with the Government’s National Task Force on Police Reforms and the Police Reforms Implementation Committee;
Assisting the Kenyan Directorate of Public Prosecutions in streamlining the country’s prosecution services;
Up-scaling drug dependence treatment with the Ministry of Medical Services;
Reviewing Kenya’s legal frameworks and providing support and training to prosecutors and police;
Improving court and prison facilities to assist in piracy prosecutions.
