Canada Concerned by Reports of Nuclear Collaboration Between Zimbabwe and Iran

OTTAWA, Canada, March 9, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Honourable Lawrence Cannon, Minister of Foreign Affairs, today issued the following statement regarding reports that Zimbabwe has agreed to supply uranium to Iran:

“We are deeply concerned by recent media reports alleging that Zimbabwe is willing to supply uranium to Iran.

“Iran continues to refuse to cooperate fully with the International Atomic Energy Agency to address concerns about the nature of its nuclear program. The UN Security Council therefore adopted resolutions 1737 of 2006 and 1803 of 2008, the second of which expressly prohibits supplying uranium to Iran.

“Furthermore, the Security Council last year passed Resolution 1929, which requires all states to prohibit investment by Iran in any commercial activity in their territory involving uranium mining, uranium production or the use of nuclear materials and technologies.

“Canada strictly adheres to these international legal obligations to prevent the sale or transfer of uranium to Iran. We continue to call on Zimbabwe and all major uranium exporters to oppose any attempt to circumvent the relevant Security Council resolutions.”
