Press release by the Representative of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Sudan / Second visit of the United Nations independent expert on the human rights situation in the Sudan

 

 

KARTHOUM, Sudan, March 3, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Independent Expert on the Human Rights situation in Sudan, Justice Mohamed Chande Othman will be conducting his second mission to Sudan from 5 to 14 March 2011.


During his mission, Justice Othman will have meetings with key Government Officials, civil society actors and human rights defenders, as well as representatives of the international community, including the Diplomatic Corps and United Nations Agencies.


The Independent Expert will visit Southern Sudan, Abyei and Darfur, to get first hand information on the referendum and post CPA issues, including the Abyei crisis, and the human rights situation in the aftermath of the recent fighting in Darfur.


The mandate of the Independent Expert on the human rights situation in Sudan was created by the United Nations Human Rights Council at its 11th session on 18 June 2009. Justice Mohamed Othman Chande was first appointed by the Council in October 2009, and he conducted his first visit to the country from 23 January to 11 February 2010.


In September 2010, his mandate was renewed and this will be his second visit to Sudan, after which he is required to present a report on his findings to the Human Rights Council.
