Telephone conversation on Libya between Minister Frattini and Hillary Clinton

 

 

ROME, Italy, February 22, 2011/African Press Organization (APO)/ — As part of the particularly intense contacts over recent days between Italian and US diplomacy on recent developments in North Africa, Foreign Minister Franco Frattini spoke by telephone this afternoon with the America Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton.

These phone calls have been an opportunity to discuss both sides’ assessment of the situation in Egypt, which Minister Frattini will be visiting on Tuesday 22 February, Tunisia and Libya.

On the last-named, Minister Frattini, who has been keeping in close touch with interlocutors in Libya, informed Mrs Clinton of the Libyan Interior Minister’s mediation attempts in Cyrenaica between the institutions and the opponents of the regime. The aim being to foster a peaceful solution to Libya’s problems while maintaining the stability of a country that Italy deems to be of crucial importance to the entire region and indeed to Europe.

Minister Frattini also informed the Secretary of State of the possibility under consideration by the Libyan authorities of a reform to the Constitution, which may soon be discussed by the People’s Congress. He and Mrs Clinton agreed on the importance during this sensitive period of offering concrete signals of political solidarity to the countries of North Africa and of the need for close liaison at the bilateral level, and between Europe and the United States. The aim here is to promote an agreed response to foster stability and economic recovery in the region.
