Update on Shangil Tobaya situation

Following the clashes between Sudanese Armed Forces and Sudan Liberation Army / Minni Minawi in Shangil Tobaya village, North Darfur, on 14 December, UNAMID observed that its villagers had fled to Nifasha and Shaddad internally displaced persons (IDP) camps, while others took refuge around the Mission’s team site. Three civilians injured due to the shooting received treatment at UNAMID’s clinic.

Preparatory meeting on the International Water Conference for Darfur
UNAMID, the United Nations Country Team in Sudan and the Government of the Sudan hosted today in Khartoum a Pre-Conference Summit on Water. The meeting was jointly opened by the Mission’s Joint Special Representative, Ibrahim Gambari, UNICEF Representative in Sudan, Nils Katsberg, and the Minister of State, Irrigation and Water Resources, Salaheldin Yusif.

The summit served as a lead-up to the International Water Conference for Darfur, scheduled for February 2011 in Khartoum. The parties, jointly with the Qatari Embassy, the World Bank and the African Development Bank, discussed the objectives of the upcoming conference, its content and a donor appeal strategy.

Access to water has been cited by various actors as a key conflict driver in Darfur and, accordingly, has taken center-stage in discussions on peace-building and conflict resolution.

UNAMID patrols
UNAMID military conducted 120 patrols including routine, short-range, long-range, night and humanitarian escort patrols covering 61 villages and IDP camps.

UNAMID police advisors conducted 103 patrols in villages and IDP camps.
