Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI chief receives observers from la francophonie

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, November 30, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Y.J. Choi, on Monday, 29 November 2010, received Gérard Latortue, head of the observer mission deployed by La Francophonie in Côte d’Ivoire for the second round of the presidential election.

During the meeting at the headquarters of the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) in Abidjan, the two men discussed the different stages of the presidential election and the crisis-resolution process, according to the former Haitian Prime Minister.

With regard to the second round, Mr. Latortue said that, as a whole, the election had gone well. He said that even if voter turnout was lower than in the first round, it could still be around 70 percent.

Referring to incidents noted in various parts of the country, the former Prime Minister urged Ivorians to keep calm and to make every effort not to lose sight of the most important thing, which is the development of Côte d’Ivoire. “I am convinced that everything will be all right thanks to UNOCI and the different parties involved in this election,” he said.
