Cote d’Ivoire / Abou Moussa visits identity and voter’s card distribution centres in the Daloa area

ABIDJAN, Ivory Coast, October 22, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Principal Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Cote d’Ivoire, Mr. Abou Moussa, accompanied by his close aides, on Wednesday 20 October embarked on a working visit to Daloa, 382 km from Abidjan.

According to the second-in-command of the UN Operation n Cote d’Ivoire (UNOCI), the visit fell within the framework of the mobilization of UN staff on the spot and provided an opportunity to give them directives and especially to listen to their concerns during this crucial phase of the Ivorian peace process.

Mr. Moussa and his delegation also visited two identity and voter’s card distribution centres located at the community hall of the Mayor’s office and the government primary elementary school of Madogohue village, some 15 km from Daloa.

Earlier, the UNOCI delegation paid a courtesy visit to the Prefect of the region, Mr. Dacoury Lohoure Dabet, with whom they discussed UNOCI’s support to the Ivorian government including the transportation of electoral materials and the construction of 3,200 temporary shelters in open-air polling stations.

“One of the urgent tasks was the provision of shelters,” Mr. Moussa recalled. “We were able to obtain financing from the Japanese government and the shelters are under construction. We hope to finish on time so voters can fulfill their duty on 31 October,” Mr. Moussa said.

For his part, the Prefect of the region acknowledged that “thanks to UNOCI, cards have been conveyed to the remotest locations. The delicate issue remaining now is to ensure a peaceful and transparent election. At our level, we shall do all we can to meet the challenge.”

The delegation later visited the Mayor’s office to meet with the third assistant Mayor, Mr. Idrissa Coulibaly.
