UNOCI’s PDSRSG meets chief of staff of Nigerien army

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, July 21, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Principal Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire (PDSRSG), Abou Moussa, on Tuesday, in Abidjan, met with a Nigerien military delegation led by the Chief of Staff of the Nigerien Army, General Salou Souleymane, to assess the work of the contingent serving with the United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI).

“The three-day visit is aimed at assessing the work of the Nigerien contingent deployed in Sector East,” said the Chief of Operations of the Nigerien Armed Forces, Colonel Amadou Madougou, at the end of the meeting.

In this regard, Colonel Madougou said he was proud of the behaviour of UNOCI’s Nigerien peacekeepers. “Since the deployment of our soldiers, they have been held up as an example and we are proud and honoured,” he said, expressing the delegation’s gratitude to UNOCI.

The delegation met with UNOCI Force Commander General Abdul Hafiz earlier in the morning.

The Nigerien delegation will go to Bouaké and Korhogo before leaving Côte d’Ivoire on 22 July.

Niger was among the first countries which responded to a call by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in 2002 to contribute to re-establishing peace in Côte d’Ivoire. It joined the United Nations in 2004.
