Security situation in Darfur
Three UNAMID peacekeepers were killed and one seriously wounded today in a sustained firefight with unknown attackers near the village of Nertiti, located 165 southwest of El Fasher, North Darfur.

UNAMID Deputy Joint Special Representative (DJSR) Mohamed B. Yonis expressed his outrage at this act of wanton violence. Praising the courage of the peacekeepers, the DJSR stated that UNAMID would not be intimidated. “Our mission will continue to carry out its mandate, which is to bring peace and security to the people of Darfur,” he said.

The Mission calls upon the Government of the Sudan to identify, capture and swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice and reminds all parties that any attack against peacekeepers constitutes a war crime.

UN budget committee arrives in Darfur
An eighteen-member delegation from the UN’s Advisory Committee on Administrative and Budgetary Questions arrived today at UNAMID’s headquarters in El Fasher, North Darfur, beginning a two-day tour of the Mission’s area of responsibility.

The Committee, a subsidiary organ of the UN General Assembly, is tasked with helping to determine the budgets of peacekeeping missions around the world. On 30 March, UNAMID Joint Special Representative Ibrahim Gambari was in New York where he presented UNAMID’s proposed budget for the coming fiscal year.

Tomorrow, the delegation will visit El Geneina, West Darfur, before departing for Khartoum.

UNAMID patrols
UNAMID military forces conducted 85 patrols including routine, short-range, long-range, night, and humanitarian escort patrols, covering 70 villages and IDP camps during the reporting period.

UNAMID police advisors conducted 146 patrols in villages and internally displaced persons camps.
