Côte d’Ivoire / The electoral dynamic needs a new impetus, says UNOCI chief

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, June 10, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The electoral dynamic and reunification need new impetus, said the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Y.J. Choi, in Abidjan, on Wednesday, after meeting with the Chairman of the Democratic Party of Côte d’Ivoire (PDCI), Henri Konan Bédié.

The objective in the immediate future is to concentrate on the production of the definitive electoral list, said Mr. Choi, stressing that this was imperative to maintain peace and stability. “There should never be a repetition of the violence that happened in February,” he added.

Explaining the reasons for his visit a few days after his return from New York, the head of UNOCI said he it was part of his regular contact with the Ivorian protagonists. “I briefed President Bédié on the consultations on Côte d’Ivoire that we had at the Security Council,” he explained, adding, “we expressed our concerns over the Ivorian situation”.

Responding to a question on the fate of the Ouagadougou Political Agreement, after the inter-Ivorian dialogue, Mr. Choi said that by their nature, all dialogue was good. “I hope that direct contact is going to contribute to ending the deadlock and kick-start the electoral dynamic,” he said.

Mr. Choi also announced that he intended to meet the Facilitator of the Ouagadougou Political Agreement, President Blaise Compaoré, to assess the crisis-resolution process.
