Sudan / United Nations agencies and partners require access to Eastern Jebel Marra to assess the humanitarian situation and deliver assistance

KARTHOUM, Sudan, April 19, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Continued instability in parts of the Eastern Jebel Marra area of Sudan’s Darfur region has resulted in aid agencies being unable to access certain areas where they have provided aid including food, water, and medicines during the past five years.

“Our operations have been on hold for some weeks while we have been trying to reach civilians in the highlands to assess the humanitarian situation and provide any relief that might be necessary,” said the United Nations Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Georg Charpentier.

United Nations agencies and partner non-governmental organizations are working closely with line ministries and other authorities throughout Darfur supporting the needs of the population.

“As we approach the end of the dry season and water becomes scarcer, it becomes more urgent to gain access to all civilians who are living in difficult circumstances,” Mr. Charpentier added.
