Zimbabwe to host 3rd conference of AU ministers in charge of youth

The 3rd Ordinary Session of the Conference of AU Ministers in charge of Youth (COMY III) will take place in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe from 12- 16 April 2010, in order to submit the  progress made in youth development, and to call for more commitment from Member States of the African Union towards institutional and youth capacities development in Africa.


The conference is being organized under the high patronage of HE Robert Mugabe, President of the Republic of Zimbabwe.


The conference will start off with a meeting of experts, to be held from 12- 14 April, followed by the Ministers’ meeting from 15- 16 April.


President Mugabe is expected to address the keynote session of the Ministerial meeting. Other speakers will be HE Jean Ping, Chairperson of the African Union Commission; and the Minister in charge Youth of Libya who is the Chairperson of the COMY II Bureau.


Hon. Saviour Kasukuwere, Minister of Youth Development, Indigenisation and Empowerment of Zimbabwe will address the opening ceremony, as will the Mayor of Victoria Falls, the Child President of Zimbabwe and Ms. Portia Sithole, a young speaker for African youth development and empowerment advocacy (Voice of the youth).


Hon. Mr. Morgan Tsvangirai, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Zimbabwe, is expected to address the closing ceremony on 16 April, along with the AU Commission, and the Chairperson of Bureau of COMY III.


In the context of this meeting, it is worth recalling that 2010 was declared the International Year of Youth by the 64th General Assembly of the United Nations in December 2009.


The meeting is expected to conclude with the adoption of the draft Declaration of COMY III.
