Egypt / UNAMID JSR Gambari meets with Arab League Secretary-General Moussa

 

 

CAIRO, Egypt, March 23, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — UNAMD Joint Special Representative (JSR) Ibrahim Gambari was received by League of Arab States (LAS) Secretary-General Amr Moussa and Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit on 22 March 2010 at the LAS headquarters in Cairo. Professor Gambari, head of the AU-UN Mission in Darfur (UNAMID), took part in the Development and Reconstruction of Darfur Donor Conference, held in Cairo on 21 March 2010. The event was organized by the Organization of Islamic Conference and co-chaired by Egypt and Turkey.
 
The parties discussed the latest developments in Darfur, and the positive steps witnessed in the political arena through the signing of the two framework agreements between the Government of the Sudan and the Justice and Equality Movement on 23 February and with the Liberation and Justice Movement on 18 March. The initiatives contributed to ending the conflict, and the various efforts made by the joint Mission have lead toward restoring security, stability and reconciliation in all parts of Darfur.

The Secretary-General also welcomed UNAMID’s focus on spreading basic service projects to the people of Darfur and including them among its priorities in the coming period. Professor Gambari and Mr. Moussa also agreed on the continued cooperation and coordination between the Arab League and UNAMID to carry out these projects and to create the appropriate conditions for the consolidation of peace and stability and to facilitate the voluntary return of displaced persons to their homes and villages.

JSR Gambari expressed UNAMID’s readiness to provide the appropriate facilities for the Arab League to monitor the upcoming Sudanese elections in Darfur and the two sides agreed to continue the process of successful coordination and cooperation among them.

Professor Gambari thanked the host government for co-chairing the event and both sides considered the conference to be a success. He also commended the work of the Egyptian troops on the ground. The country is among the largest contributors of peacekeepers to UNAMID, providing over 2,500 military and police personnel.

The JSR and the Minister stressed that it was high time to coordinate all efforts to push forward the peace the peace process in Darfur.
