Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria / Launch of 2010 Results Report

JOHANNESBURG, South-Africa, March 3, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — On the occasion of the launch of its 2010 Results Report, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has the pleasure to invite the media to a press conference on:

Monday 8 March at 11:30 AM
The Grace Hotel
Rosebank, Johannesburg

At this press conference, the Global Fund will present its 2010 Results Report, which shows outstanding progress in fighting AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria, particularly in Africa, and how its investments have helped accelerate progress towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The report also shows that if the Global Fund can continue to scale up activities at the pace set in recent years, it will be possible to reach or even exceed the health-related MDG goals by 2015, including the virtual elimination of mother-to-child HIV transmission. In October 2010, the Global Fund is holding its third replenishment session, where governments will make their financial pledges for the period 2011-2013, which are crucial years in the run-up to the 2015 target date for the MDGs.

The Global Fund, UNAIDS, Stop TB, Roll Back Malaria and WHO play a central part in this fight. Through this joint work, major progress has been made on child and maternal health by reducing the largest causes of mortality among women and children – in sub-Saharan Africa alone, HIV, TB and malaria are responsible for 52% of deaths among women of childbearing age and malaria alone accounts for 16% to 18% of child deaths.

At  the briefing, will be present:

Dr Aaron Motsoaledi – Minister of Health, South Africa

Ms Mamphela Ramphele (TBC) – Executive chairperson, Circle Capital Ventures, and board member of the Rockefeller Foundation

Mr Michel Sidibé – Executive Director of UNAIDS and Under-Secretary General of the United Nations

Professor Michel Kazatchkine – Executive Director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria

Interview-opportunities will be provided after the press conference
