Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI chief insists on respect of rules in processing of appeals

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, March 2, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Côte d’Ivoire, Y. J. Choi, on Monday, in Abidjan, appealed for the rules governing the processing of appeals regarding the provisional electoral list to be respected.

Speaking to the press after a meeting with the Ivorian Prime Minister, Guillaume Soro, Mr. Choi stressed the need to resolve the crisis by respecting the rules established for processing appeals.

In this regard, Mr. Choi recalled that people were free to contest the list provided they produced evidence. “You can contest the list but you must provide evidence,” he said. He stressed the importance of seizing the opportunity to resolve the crisis.

“We owe it to Ivorians to resolve the crisis by carrying out the remaining four phases, namely the production of the definitive electoral list, the production of the cards followed by their distribution as well as the two weeks for the electoral campaign,” said the Special Representative.
