African Union / Second Africa health lifestyles day commemorates

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia, March 1, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The Second Africa Healthy Lifestyles Day was celebrated on Saturday, 27 February 2010, at the AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa,  Ethiopia under the theme: “Food, Fun, and Fitness: Health is Wealth”

The event, which was organized by the AU Medical Service and the Department of Social Affairs of the African Union Commission (AUC), included a health fun walk accompanied by Ethiopian Police March Band that started on Saturday morning at 8:30am from Minilik Square, Piazza to the AU commission.  The AU staff and their families, and other invited people were among the participants.

Following the end of the walk Dr. Olawale Maiyegun, Director for Social Affairs of the AUC addressed the participants on the need to promote healthy lifestyles like good eating habits and regular physical activities.

‘Prevention is better than cure’ the Director noted while emphasizing the importance of this activity, and adding that it is the responsibility of all individuals regardless of gender and age.

According to the Director, studies have shown that by adopting broader prevention plans, African countries could achieve 10 more healthy life years for their people. “It is for this reason that the AUC has fostered various initiatives within the framework of the WHO strategy for prevention and control of non-communicable diseases and the Africa Health Strategy” he added. (The complete speech of the Director is available on the AU website: http://www.Africa-union.org)

Also marking the day, a football tournament between men and women of the AUC staff took place, which resulted in a 2-1 victory for the women.

The decision to commemorate the last Friday of February as Africa Healthy lifestyles Day was adopted by the AU Executive Council in July 2008 at the AU Headquarters, in Addis Ababa.
