UK welcomes Sudan/Darfur ceasefire.

LONDON, United-Kingdom, February 23, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — Baroness Kinnock has welcomed the framework agreement between the Government of Sudan and Darfur’s largest rebel group the Justice and Equality Movement. Baroness Kinnock, Minister with responsibility for Africa, said the agreement and ceasefire “offers a sign of hope for the people of Darfur”.

She said:

‘I welcome the conclusion by the Government of Sudan and the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), of a framework agreement and a ceasefire for Darfur. Together with the recent rapprochement between Sudan and Chad, this agreement offers a sign of hope for the people of Darfur, who have suffered for far too long. I commend the African Union (AU)/United Nations (UK) mediator, Djibril Bassolé, and the State of Qatar for their patience and persistence in seeking a lasting settlement.
I urge the parties to move now to implement the agreement they have reached, with the support of AU/UN operation in Darfur (UNAMID) under the leadership of Ibrahim Gambari. I also call on all Darfur’s armed groups and leaders to show a similar commitment to peace. All Darfuris have a right to expect their leaders to unite and to join fully in the peace process.
The year ahead holds many challenges for Sudan. The British Government will continue to give all its support to securing lasting peace, with the UN, AU, EU, Thabo Mbeki and other partners, in particular for full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement. Achieving a stable peace in Darfur is an vital part of that wider goal. All sides in Sudan must now urgently redouble their efforts for peace.’
