Côte d’Ivoire / UNOCI sensitizes civil society in man on a peaceful electoral environment

 

 

ABIDJAN, Côte d’Ivoire, February 3, 2010/African Press Organization (APO)/ — The United Nations Operation in Côte d’Ivoire (UNOCI) organized, on Monday, 1st February 2010, in Man, 578 km northwest of Abidjan, a workshop for civil society on the theme: “The Involvement of Civil Society in establishing a peaceful electoral environment in the 18 Montagnes region”.

 

UNOCI’s focal point in Man, Stéphane Ziegler, reminded the 50 participants that the workshop was aimed at reinforcing the achievements made so far with regard to the organization of free, transparent and open elections.

 

“This seminar is not the first of its kind”, he said. In accordance with its mandate, UNOCI organizes several activities throughout the country to sensitize the population in general and civil society and political parties in particular on the need to organize elections in cohesion and peace.

 

“Therefore one of its priorities today is to provide unfailing support to Ivorians for the holding of fair, transparent and credible elections, which necessarily involves a peaceful electoral climate”, he said. He urged everyone to participate actively. and honourable participation.

 

The Public Information Officer in Man, Salvator Ndabazerutse explained to the participants the expectations of the workshop, aimed at sensitizing the population on the need to establish a peaceful electoral climate and pragmatic actions from the participants as opinion leaders.

 

Professionals from UNOCI and the civil society spoke on several themes, including: “The protection of human rights as a factor of a peaceful electoral climate”; “The knowledge of the institutions involved in the management of the elections in Côte d’Ivoire and their role in establishing a peaceful electoral environment”; “Civil society’s contribution to a peaceful electoral climate” and “The strengthening of social cohesion in an electoral period”.
